This fall, the Yale School of Art welcomed renowned South African beadwork artist Hlengiwe Dube to lead a four-day workshop in traditional Zulu beadworking. Dube was an artist in residence at School of Art September 18—September 21, 2023 in 36 Edgewood Ave., hosting drop-in beading hours and an Interdepartmental Day workshop.

Born in 1974 in New Hanover, South Africa, Dube moved to the valley of a thousand hills in KwaZulu Natal—heartland of the Zulu Kingdom—at the age of nine. Here she learned to bead from her grandmother, and sold her first piece of beadwork, a ‘love letter’ necklace at the age of 12. From her grandmother and mother, she gained a deep knowledge and appreciation for the history of Zulu beadwork, especially the meanings of different colors and patterns: the language of beads.
This program was generously supported by John and Kate Carrafiell, the Yale School of Art’s Cross-Cultural Fund and the Yale University Art Gallery.

|
This semester, our new Director of Sustainable Equity and Inclusion, Dannika Kemp Avent, is hosting a series of programming during Interdepartmental Wednesdays aimed at fostering a broader and more whole sense of inclusivity and belonging across the School.
A series of wellness sessions on grief—creating a safe space where School of Art students, faculty, and staff can share and process emotions while supporting one another—are being co-hosted by Dannika and Mental Health and Wellness Counselor, Krista Dobson.
We're also excited to be hosting Transgender Equity Consulting, who will be joining us to lead a three-session series on increasing cultural competencies in serving the LGBTQ+ communities. The sessions begin with "Foundational Understandings," focusing on language and key concepts, followed by the "Current Political Moment," on current anti-trans legislation, what can be done, and how we can be supportive of one another. The final session, hosted for SoA faculty and staff, is geared toward expanding knowledge and awareness of issues affecting the trans community.
An upcoming session in the spring on generational differences will explore how understanding generational gaps can help us better communicate with and understand one another.

Six alums named as 2024 Fountainhead artists-in-residence!
Congratulations to Zoe, Natia, Daniela, Victoria, Catalina, and Adam!
|
|
Yale School of Art MFA alums represented in Fountainhead's 2024 artist residency cohort.
|
|
In mid-October, the Miami-based arts nonprofit, Fountainhead, announced their 2024 cohort of artists-in-residence, and of the thirty artists chosen to spend a month creating work in Miami, six are MFA program alums from the Yale School of Art!
Zoe Walsh, MFA '16, will kick off SoA representation in the program in February 2024, followed by Natia Lemay, MFA '23, in May. During each month-long residency, artists are introduced to nationally recognized curators, collectors, and gallerists for one-on-one studio visits. Attorneys, financial professionals, and business consultants are also made available to fellows as a resource. Daniela Gomez Paz, MFA '23, will be in residence at Fountainhead in June 2024, and Victoria Martinez, MFA '20, will follow her in July.
Artists live and work communally in a 1950s home, in the historic and centrally-located Morningside neighborhood. And at the end of each month, Fountainhead invites the public to meet the artists and purchase their work. Finally, Catalina Ouyang, MFA '19, will be in residence in August 2024, and Adam Amram, MFA '24, will be in Miami in October 2024—less than six months after graduation!
