On September 28, the School of Art was pleased to share the news that 2014 alumna of the Painting/Printmaking program Jordan Casteel, had been named a 2021 MacArthur Fellow by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The youngest of the 2021 class of MacArthur fellows, Casteel is one of twenty-five artists, scholars, and scientists selected for their work across disciplines, ranging from civil rights, computational virology and geomorphology, to performance and visual arts.
MacArthur Fellows are selected based on three criteria: exceptional creativity, promise for significant future advances based on past accomplishments, and potential for the fellowship to facilitate subsequent creative work.
In a recent Yale Daily News piece, Director of Graduate Studies in Painting/Printmaking Anoka Faruqee shared: "In our one on one and group conversations about politics, color and space, Jordan Casteel was always attentive, open minded, and grounded. Casteel’s works express her deep curiosity and her generosity of spirit."

New post-grad fellowship project with 2021 MFAs
Developed in collaboration with The Hundreds
|
|
From left to right: Mickey Aloisio, Photography MFA ‘21; Furqan Jawed, Graphic Design MFA ‘21; Emma Safir, Painting/Printmaking MFA ‘21.

Last week, we were excited to share the results of a new SoA post-grad fellowship project, developed in collaboration with the community-based streetwear brand, The Hundreds. Three students from our MFA class of 2021, each representing a different area of graduate study, were commissioned to create work specifically for the mass-produced medium, tote bag.
A further expansion of how we understand and engage with the idea of “exhibition” in a post- and still-COVID world, the project allows for these alum’s work to be made available through limited edition tote bags, the sales of which go back into the SoA ecosystem these students just emerged from, supporting the School of Art.
Featured artists include Mickey Aloisio, Photography MFA ‘21, Furqan Jawed, Graphic Design MFA ‘21, and Emma Safir, Painting/Printmaking MFA ‘21. The artist-designed totes are available online here from The Hundreds.

With the Fall 2021 semester, we began the School of Art's first recordings of in-person lectures, building on the archival efforts that originated during COVID with talks conducted via Zoom.
We're excited to share that we'll be able to make the first clips and segments of these recordings public in the coming weeks. But until then, we encourage you to check out the videos we've already published, which includes the community-hosted events during last spring's Open Studios, as well as Visiting Artist lectures by semester from Spring 2020, Fall 2020, and Spring 2021.
