Taeyoon Choi: Lichenous Networks

Public virtual lecture happening TONIGHT at 6:30PM

Poster design by Paul Bille and Jisung Park, Graphic Design MFAs ‘23.

The Yale School of Art's Graphic Design department invites you to a virtual public lecture with Taeyoon Choi:

TONIGHT, Tuesday, November 30 at 6:30PM EST
On Zoom here >

Taeyoon Choi makes drawings, computer programs and performance. He co-founded the School for Poetic Computation in New York City. Now, he lives in South Korea.

"Networks are not only technological, they're natural. Every week, I drive about two hours south from Seoul to work on a half-acre farm in Gyeryong mountain. I used to come to the farm as a kid. The small yew trees that I planted are more than a few feet tall now. Wild weeds took over the trees while the farm was neglected for decades. I’m learning the basics of forest maintenance and farming machinery, taking solace in the physical labor of weeding and digging, and appreciating the birth and decay of life-forms. During this time, I’m in an active dialogue with the fungi, critters, and animals around the farm. The biologist Lynn Marguli advocates that individuality is a false belief. “Life did not take over the globe by combat, but by networking,” she asserts in her book Symbiotic Planet (1998). Lichens, for instance, form mutually beneficial relationships between fungi and algae, such that they coexist in interdependence while each element's integrity is maintained. The future of networking may be an interdependent relationship between virtual and real life experiences that takes its cues from the partnerships of lichens."

The Paul Rand Lecture Series is made possible through the generosity of the Paul Rand (’85 M.A.H.) Annual Lectureship in Design Fund.

All-School, in-person events return!

The SoA community safely gathers together for an opening reception

MFA students in Green Hall Gallery for the first in-person, All-School community gathering: an opening reception for the Fall 2021 First-Year MFA Show, hosted on October 29, 2021.

On October 29, the School of Art was excited to be able to host its first in-person All-School event: a Halloween-themed opening reception for the First-Year MFA Show, ACTION REQUIRED. While attendance was limited only to current SoA faculty, staff, and students, this event marked an important turning point as the first community-wide gathering we've been able to host since the start of the pandemic.

Immense thanks to all members of the SoA community who — through regular testing, mask-wearing indoors, and continued dedication to hand-washing and hygiene — have collectively contributed, alongside an increasingly vaccinated population, to the recent low levels of COVID-19 infections among members of our campus community. While we're excited about this continuing progress (the University's alert level was changed to Green on November 4), the public is still unable to visit our in-person exhibitions and events and there are still a number of COVID-related policies in place.

We hope to welcome the public back to campus soon, but we're excited to be able to continue making our exhibitions public virtually through 3D walkthroughs and archival documentation.

Dean Pinder hosts field trips across New Haven

Our new dean initiates a continuing series of community-focused events

Lindsey Mancini leads a public art tour for MFA students on November 1, 2021. From left to right: Lindsey Mancini, Assistant Director of Communications, Siri Lee, Graphic Design MFA '24, M.C. Madrigal, Graphic Design MFA '23, Daedalus Li, Graphic Design MFA '24, Claire Hungerford, Graphic Design MFA '23, Dean Kymberly Pinder, Lester Rosso, Graphic Design MFA '23, David Jon Walker, Graphic Design MFA '23, Miraj Patel, Photography MFA '23, Mike Tully, Graphic Design MFA '22, Junyi Shi, Graphic Design MFA '23, and Jill Westgard, Director for Development and Alumni Relations.

Our new dean has been organizing what she envisions as a continuing series of community-focused events in her first term, connecting the School of Art community directly with the city of New Haven. For Dean Pinder, it's a kind of reconnection as she returns to New Haven after living here in the '90s while obtaining a PhD in Art History from Yale's Department of the History of Art.

So far, these field trips have included a public art tour hosted by the School's Assistant Director of Communications, Lindsey Mancini, who maintains an independent art-mapping project, as well as a trip to Artspace with the executive director of the local contemporary art gallery and non-profit organization, Lisa Dent.

More trips are being planned for the Spring semester and beyond—including an upcoming outing with New Haven’s Director of Cultural Affairs—as the School of Art continues its engagement with communities across physical and digital spaces.

School of Art alums are invited to submit events and exhibitions to be added to the new School of Art in the World calendar, as well as publications and initiatives to be archived on the wiki.

Members of the public are invited to subscribe to the School of Art in the World calendar, and visit the full wiki archive.

Thank you for being part of our community. During these uncertain times, we've created support funds to help address the School's most pressing needs.

We appreciate your support!
