Spring 2021 in review

2021 Open Studios graphic identity by Mengjie Liu and Churong Mao, Graphic Design MFAs '22.

Spring 2021 was an especially busy semester at the Yale School of Art! In addition to staging the six annual MFA thesis exhibitions, an additional three exhibitions were staged in 32 Edgewood Gallery—all rescheduled from the spring of 2020. These included the second group of the 2020 Sculpture MFAs, who together presented No Deep Kissing in March; the 2020 undergraduate art majors who exhibited their work in Unfinished in April; and finally the 2020 Graphic Design cohort who staged On my way! in May. Over the summer, the 2020 MFA thesis exhibition in Photography will be installed in Green Hall Gallery.

In addition to an unusually full exhibition schedule, the Spring 2021 semester also welcomed more than 50 speakers to campus virtually, and included a reprise of the Photography department's Pop Up Lecture Series, as well as an extension of the Graphic Design Guest Speaker Series. The Painting/Printmaking program also organized a special workshop series open to the School of Art community, which included events like "Ask a Curator" with René Morales from the Pérez Art Museum Miami, and "Ask a Gallerist" with Alia Williams from Jeffrey Deitch and Joeonna Bellorado-Samuels from Jack Shainman.

In April, the School hosted its first-ever virtual Open Studios, in which a series of public online events were held, artists opened their studio spaces to the public via Zoom, and MFA students' work was exhibited as a cohesive whole online, through virtual studios developed in collaboration with each artist. Two virtual 2021 Open Studios events are available to watch in full on YouTube, and the virtual studios will remain online through March 2022. Visit 2021 Open Studios >>
